Prompts: Learn, Practice & Interview Prep
Prompts #11–#16: build a course, understand and compare concepts, practise interactively, and prepare for interviews and exams.
The last six prompts turn an AI assistant into a personal SQL tutor: one that builds your study plan, explains any concept with an analogy, quizzes you, and runs mock interviews.
Definition
Learning with AI means using the assistant as an interactive tutor: you set the topic, level and format, and it explains, quizzes and gives feedback. You still check its claims against real queries.
Prompt #11 — Create an SQL course
text
Create a comprehensive SQL course with a detailed roadmap and agenda.
Do the following:
1. Start with SQL fundamentals and advance to complex topics.
2. Make it beginner-friendly.
3. Include topics relevant to data analytics.
4. Focus on real-world data analytics use cases and scenarios. What you get back: a weekly study plan. Compare it with this course's roadmap.
Prompt #12 — Understand an SQL concept
text
I want a detailed explanation about SQL Window Functions.
Do the following:
1. Explain what Window Functions are.
2. Give an analogy.
3. Describe why we need them and when to use them.
4. Explain the syntax.
5. Provide simple examples.
6. List the top 3 use cases.Swap in any concept: CTE, index, GROUP BY, JOIN… The analogy is what makes it stick.
Prompt #13 — Compare SQL concepts
text
I want to understand the differences between SQL Window Functions and GROUP BY.
Do the following:
1. Explain the key differences between the two concepts.
2. Describe when to use each concept, with examples.
3. Provide the pros and cons of each concept.
4. Summarize the comparison in a clear side-by-side table.Good pairs to compare: UNION vs UNION ALL, CTE vs view, DELETE vs DROP, WHERE vs HAVING.
Prompt #14 — Practice SQL
text
Act as an SQL trainer and help me practice SQL Window Functions.
Do the following:
1. Make it interactive: you provide a task and give a solution.
2. Provide a sample dataset.
3. Give SQL tasks that gradually increase in difficulty.
4. Act as an SQL Server and show the results of my queries.
5. Review my queries, provide feedback, and suggest improvements.Tip: Tell it to use the IPL tables as the dataset, then run your answers in the playgrounds on this site. The AI "acting as SQL Server" can get results wrong; a real database can't.
Prompt #15 — Prepare for an SQL interview
text
Act as an Interviewer and prepare me for a SQL interview.
Do the following:
1. Ask common SQL interview questions.
2. Make it interactive: practice, you provide a question and give answer.
3. Gradually progress to advanced topics.
4. Evaluate my answer and give me a feedback.Ask for follow-up questions too. Real interviewers dig deeper after your first answer.
Prompt #16 — Prepare for an SQL exam
text
Prepare me for a SQL exam.
Do the following:
1. Ask common SQL interview questions.
2. Make it interactive: practice, you provide a question and give answer.
3. Gradually progress to advanced topics.
4. Evaluate my answer and give me a feedback. It's the same loop as the interview, tailored to your syllabus. Add a focus line such as "Focus on JOINs and CTEs" and keep track of your weak topics.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Reading explanations without writing queries. ✅ After every explanation, write and run one query yourself.
- ❌ Believing the AI's "simulated" result table. ✅ Run the query on a real database (like the playgrounds here) to confirm.
Key points to remember
- Prompt #11 builds a beginner-friendly SQL roadmap focused on real data-analytics scenarios.
- Prompt #12 explains any concept in six steps: what, analogy, why/when, syntax, examples, top 3 use cases.
- Prompt #13 compares two concepts and ends with a side-by-side table (e.g. window functions vs GROUP BY).
- Prompt #14 turns the AI into an interactive SQL trainer with tasks that get gradually harder.
- Prompts #15 and #16 run mock interviews and exam practice with feedback on your answers.
- An AI 'acting as SQL Server' can invent wrong results; verify by running the query for real.
